One of the greatest movies of all time was Ghostbusters. It was followed up with one of the greatest cartoons of all time, The Real Ghostbusters (one of the most successful Movie-to-TV translations EVER). The mix of comedy, horror, and weird science was white-hot in the Eighties, and still maintains a loyal fan following to this day!!!
So what does it have going for it?
1. Comedy. Duh. You get funny guys like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Lorenzo Music involved with something, it's hard not to get pure comic gold.
2. Weird science. The ideas of Ghostbusters, mixing sciece and the supernatural, are grounded in real modern quantum theory. The fact that the pseudoscience of the movies and the cartoons is mostly consistant is part of the appeal (at least to me)
3. Different. The first movie was like nothing that had ever been onscreen before, and was justly the highest grossing comedy of all time (until that retarded Macauley Culkin movie came along ) The Real Ghostbusters was just light years ahead of the formulaic crap Saturday Morning was shovelling on us at the time. If you don't remember that time, imagine a time where every f***ing cartoon was a clone of either Scooby Doo, the Smurfs, or the Filmation He-Man.
4. The best group of characters I've ever seen. The chemistry between Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore, and Janine Melnitz is just about the most perfect I've ever seen.
If you haven't already done so, I invite you to take a look at some of the Ghostbuster links at the side of the main page. Let me mention a couple in particular...
The Ghostbusters Omnibus Timeline
The whole reason I started the Ectozone on May 13, 2003, was to present this work to the world. It's my mad attempt to integrate the movies and both animated series (RGB and Extreme Ghostbusters (XGB)) into one streamlined continuity. Aside from a few bumps, it mostly works.
The Ghostbusters Fact List
Written by Ben King and Matthew Riddle, with a little help from me, this is the most definitive listing of the tools and talents I've ever seen.
The Ghostbusters Omnibus Fan Fic Center
A whole fan fiction universe based on the Timeline. Features some spectacular work from Ben King, Brian Reilly, CJ, and many more. Okay, my stuff is there too, but don't hold it against it.
Ectozone Fan Fictions
My complete library of work to date. Well-recieved stories like "The Zodiac Imperative", "Fateful Opportunity", "Shadow of the Inquisitors", and "Charlie Takes the Fifth"
A few other notes:
You remember that "Egon and Janine Forever" rule? I consider this weird relationship one of the most singularly interesting things about Ghostbusters...so keep that in mind before starting any "But I think she belongs with Louis Tully" and "I want to have Egon marry my Mary Sue character" nonsense.
I may be in the minority, but I liked Extreme Ghostbusters, so endless slams of it will not endear you to me. It had it's problems, granted, but I still enjoyed it a great deal, and you'll note that I use the characters in my fan fictions.
Keep those things in mind, and we'll get along just great.
