**spoiler warnings**
I talk about the story, so if you don't have it yet and don't want to know, don't read on! You have been warned!
I finally got my copies of The Zeddemore Factor in the mail today, and I gotta say--it's another pretty damn cool release from 88MPH.
I was a tad disappointed when I first saw the cover shot a while back--I'd seen a pencil sketch from Billy Dallas Patton depicting the four Ghostbusters that was presumably intended as the original cover. But the simple ghost trap on the white background is a eye-catching image, and that is of course the point.
BDP's artwork was sensational. I'd have to see it in color to really match it against Steve Kurth, but it's easily just as good. I wonder if he'll ever do any more GB work some day...
The story as a whole was a great concept--show what happens when the unbelieving "If there's a steady paycheck in it" Winston is confronted with the reality of What He's Gotten Himself Into for the first time. He freezes. He makes a silly mistake. He gets slimed. But he comes through in the end.
My favorite lines came from said sliming:
(Paraphrased)
Venkman (to Winston) You got slimed, huh? Welcome to the club.
Egon: Remember not to wash that off until I collect a sample.
Venkman: I didn't say it was a good club.
(As a fan fic writer, with a Timeline he's maintaining, I'm glad to say this is the first 88MPH story that is 100% totally compatible with it. I've used bits and pieces of "Legion", but as far as I'm concerned in the GBOT fan fic universe, "The Zeddemore Factor" IS the story of Winston's first night for us too)
Being a shorter story than normal, somebody gets the short end of the stick and in this one it seems to be Ray. But that's okay, as he's getting a lot to do over in "Legion"
Venkman gets all the best lines as usual, and the sequence with the girl hitting him up for an autograph was priceless. It was once again something I could so easily have seen JMS subjecting Lorenzo Music too...and you know I mean that as a compliment.
And Egon...some nice little bits with him at the beginning, what with his weird dreams and apparent interest in...well, I can't remember what it was called, but the art of personality reading/prognostication from the shape of one's head. Suffice it to say that Egon should always have a weird angle to him...
About my only regret is that this story's setting and brevity meant we didn't get to see BDP's version of Janine. That would've been interesting. ;D
