I've had the Ectozone hosted with Angelfire.com since the very beginning. It was almost six months after the day the site came up before I purchased the Ectozone.com domain name from Lycos. (in between, it was Ectozone.tk for a while)
I purchased the Ectozone.net domain from GoDaddy.com two and a half years ago, originally to be the url for my Digimon site; I did notice some blurb about "Free Web Hosting With Domain Purchase" but I looked around the web site and saw their "WebSite Tonight" program and thought it didn't look any better than Angelfire or Cyberturf (then the host of the Digimon site) or Freehomepages.com (the host of the GBWC site since before there was a gbwc.net) I set the domain url to redirect to cyberturf.com/digimon and left it at that.
Of course, the Digimon site never really took off, and later I tried to use Ectozone.net as a bit of a webring. That didn't really do a lot either, and since earlier this year ectozone.net has just been a redirect to this board.
Recently, whether it's an actual upgrade of GoDaddy's service, or I just read the wrong stuff, I've discovered I was very very wrong. It's a "real" web host program, with at present 5GB of web space, 100GB of bandwidth, MySQL database capacity, the works (maybe not as good as something I'd have to pay $20.00 a month for, granted, but it's frickin' free with something I'm already buying from them!!!) In four years I've filled about 12 MB, but that was through constantly trying to keep my file size down, and deleting some stuff I didn't need anymore
So here's the idea I'm contemplating. I may move Ectozone.com's content over to Ectozone.net. If I did that (and it's still an "if") it'd offer gobs more storage room, and less worries about how much I'm sending up there. I would have to recode all the ectozone.com urls in the pages and/or change ectozone.com into a redirect (I could set GoDaddy as the DNS, but then I'd lose my email redirects; actually transferring the domain would be an even bigger pain in the ass. Worse, it would involve spending $6.95)
And the one that is both the most exciting to me personally, but also has a downside:
We could have our own, sparkly, shiny PHPBB message board hosted on it, like the ones GBI, GBHQ, and Nightsquad use. The downside, of course, is that there is no way to transfer the data from this board to a new one: Proboards remote hosts this board, and they don't allow copies of their databases.
We have put over three years into this one, but it looks to be ages before Proboards upgrades their system. PHPBB is already on the cusp of a huge upgrade you can already see on the Nightsquad board (PHPBB 3.0.RC3--if no more significant bugs are found the next step will be a full, stable release. And once that release comes, I'll be lobbying Net to get it at GBHQ) And certainly this board would not be deleted, just archived and disabled for new posts.
I could even do one or the other in both combinations. Leave Ectozone.com alone and still make Ectozone.net the host of a PHPBB forum; or I could move the pages to Ectozone.net and leave Ectozone.proboards31.com alone.
I could even not do much of anything at all--go ahead and set up Ectozone.net basically as a mirror site, but keep the emphasis on Ectozone.com.
But as with every major decision, I wanted to get the input of the people who put up with my crap first.
I've taken the first small step. The Ectozone.net account has already been opened, though if you put in the url to the main page it will just take you to a page with a link to this board. I have gotten two directories done: www.ectozone.net/images and www.ectozone.net/gbtimeline , if you want a look (not actually going to look any different, to tell the truth)
I await your input on the matter.
