You better watch yourself there, Ben. Taking potshots at gay porn and Mary Sues is one thing, but we're kind of fond of some non-canon kids in these here parts... ;D ... I'm sure it says something that this is the most active topic this forum's seen in months. What that something is, I don't know, but it says something... (off topic...oh, look, post 1,111 )

Plus when I used to read Ray/Winston Slash, I also find that kind of gross and according the RGB primer someone wrote that when slash Ray is partner up with Slash Winston he needs a lot of cuddling. That's kind of way off there, because I don't Ray really needs all of that and it really doesn't make sense either. Who know's maybe it's just me.

Because everyone automatically assumes that Ray is a pansy.

I know but I really don't think Ray is a pansy at all. I think slash wirters make him a bit off charater and revert him to acting like a baby. That also really turns me off right there and I stopped reading them afterwards.

Iain once told me that the term 'slash', in spite of its origins, only refers to homosexual couplings. I guess if that's what everybody takes it to mean, then that's what it means. ...a lot of stuff Rosey's put together has been interesting to read and falls neither into the 'Sue/Stu'isms or 'Slash'. Interesting. Yikes. Since Jo Miller is the only one of my original characters to be involved with a canon character (who wasn't only a baby in canon), I put her through the Mary Sue litmus test that ghostdiva pasted into this thread a little while back. I at first thought she scored one for appearing in the first chapter of her first story - but, looking at the story again, she doesn't, so I guess that means she scores a nice round zero. I can guess more or less what a Freudian psych major would say. As to all the other kinds of psychologists, I don't know, but whatever it is it's bound to be wrong.

Fritz said it the best with his ultimate mary sue story.

That's very true. When I write Ray, I make sure that he's in character and he does swear once a while. I make him more mature and grown up.

Something a lot of them forget (I'm a bit guilty of this myself) is that Ray is a walking encycleopedia of occult knowledge, the show and (to a lesser extent) movie established that he'd spurt off references most people wouldn't get...
He seems to be one of the most poorly written characters when it comes to fanfic adaptations. Not saying anyone here has written him badly.

I take pride in the few times I've written him, lol. And I plan to write a few more stories involving him as well. Since Ray is my favorite of the original team, I get kind of defensive of him when people write him badly, haha.

I think it's a combination of problems:
--Most writers are more interested in Egon and/or Venkman (or, as we've noted before in this thread, both in a very :shudder: canonically unjustified way)
--Ray is a little goofy. Too many writers seem to think Goofy=Stupid. Ray's very emotional and watches lots of cartoons. The hack writers misinterpret that as childishness.
--Preoccupied with "Egon is the Smart One" they forget Ray's a very intelligent preson in his own right, probably also of genius-level intelligence. He's also intellectually diverse: he's not only an occult scholar, who arguable actually knows more about occult lore than Egon, he's a gifted engineer and mechanic. Ray's the one that actually builds most of the strange stuff Egon comes up with.

It wasn't till I got older that I noticed that as for as my personality Ray is the one I have the most in common with . keep in mind I didn't intend to grow up to act like him. and it's only went I'm in a good mood do I act like him .
so just because I can sing a hole theme song to a show and will do a jig if I here really good news. plus withe my dyslexia I get the feeling that people think I'm a idiot and will some time's treat me like one .
I think that people confuse enthusiasm with stupidity .
I will say that it's a small small comfort seeing the looks on people faces when I start caring on a intelligent conversation and some times I get a look like there saying to themselves " why didn't I think of that "
so to stop my ramblings I think all the OG characters aren't written just quite rite .

I agree with that. I don't think Ray is childness at all. He just happens to excited about his job. I think the hack writers did a botched up job on that and I really don't like how they wrote Ray.

I hate all slashing! It just goes against everything I grew up with: Janine and Egon, Peter and Dana (mostly Dana anyway) etc. The GBs were never depicted as gay or bisexual, nor were any of the female characters. Of course not all slashing is gay. P/J or W/J ring any bells? I've had the same problems with Jackalman on You Tube. I don't know whether they're male or female. But they always go on about Egon and Kylie and they have such disrespect for RGB. They always say Kylie is pretty, but Janine is prettier. So I wonder if they have a thing for Janine. Abandon 666 is horrible they want to see a Kylie and Janine pairing! Urgghhh. Stomach churning. I came across an awful short fic that had Janine having a sexual encounter with Louise, the temp, in the episode Janine's Day Off and I was disgusted. I didn't read much mind you, just enough to see what was happening. Then there was one written by the same people I assume because their page designs were the same. It screwed with one of my all time fave J&E cartoon bits. The taxi scene in Cold Cash and Hot Water. It made out that Janine had forced herself to sit between Egon and Peter (Okay maybe she did make sure she sat next to Egon, but that's just Janine being Janine) and it upset Peter because he wantd to sit next to Egon, you know because he supposedly has romantic feelings towards Egon. Yuck! When I find myself staring at that particular web page design when I click on a link while looking for some decent fics I go "Oh no!" and get the hell outta there. I'll say it again: I hate all slashing! And as a good friend of mine (Who is incidentally bisexual) says: Revoltin' (Couldn't put any better CG!) Of course I could always add: Hideous!... LOL

Some of us are quite familiar with Jackalman from the old GBN (pre-July 2003) days. It's our understanding Jackalman is a woman if Iraqi or at least Middle-Eastern extraction with at least one kid. She had a low opinion of Eduardo and a high opinion of Saddam Hussein.
She's hard for us to take seriously, as you might guess.
