As you can probably tell by my avvy choice, I love anime. Some of it is probably better than a lot of American cartoons (I wont touch on Pokemon). So to open up a new topic, let's hear some of your faves! Mine are:
Mobile Police Patlabor Azumanga Daioh Love Hina Excel Saga 3x3 Eyes Shadow Skill Tokyo Babylon Detective Conan Gundam Gundam Wing Gundam Seed G Gundam MS O8th Team Silent Mobius Last Exile Wolf's Rain Hellsing Sailor Moon Full Metal Panic ...and more as soon as I can remember them!

I'm not the biggest Anime expert ever...that title goes to one of my friends. Mostly I only get to see what's on Adult Swim, though my friend did force me to watch Kare Kano...Ugh, teenagers and romance and being popular...
I've always liked Cowboy Bebop, I had Trigun on DVD before AS even aired it, I've got Outlaw Star too...
Right now I'm liking Case Closed/Detective Conan, and wishing there was a lot more new Inuyasha...I'm not a big fan of Witch Hunter Robin or Wolf's Rain though...

How big a fan am I? I still haven't ruled out giving anime it's own board here in Ex Miscellanea. I'm older than you guys, so my first anime memory was seeing "Battle of the Planets" on local TV. A few years later there was Voltron, and then the watershed event: a thing called Robotech. THAT was revelation: people dying in cartoons! Actual ongoing plot lines! Other favorites: Just about any Gundam. I'd probably say the original and, strangely enough, the whacked-out G Gundam are my favorites, but I haven't watched a stinker yet (I haven't seen much of Wing--we got Cartoon Network right about the time they stopped showing it) Gundam Seed is intriguing so far, being a modernized retelling of the original. There's a couple of flaky girls with squeaky voices that are making me cringe, but damn....Murrue Ramius is a lot hotter than Bright Noa Trigun. Imagine my surprise to realize that Adam the Power Ranger was the voice of Vash the Stampede! Cowboy Bebop. Well, hell, how can I not like this show? Faye Valentine. Steven Jay Blum (possibly the coolest anime dub voice actor of them all). Fungus monsters in the refrigerator. Cool. Big O. More Steve Blum. Batman meets Gundam. Just don't try to think too hard about the ending, or it'll make blood shoot out of your ears. Digimon. Yeah, I liked Digimon (Veedramon was my GBN user name fergrifessake) Maybe it won't go down as a classic in anime history, but it did have some great voice actors (including aforementioned Mister Blum) and some snappy dialog (episodes written by Jeff Nimoy and Bob Bucholz especially). The "monster tamer" genre may have it's limits, but this is definitely the best example of it. Inu-Yasha. To me, this is definitely Rumiko Takahashi's best show. Urasei Yatsura--specificially Lum--got on my nerves quick, and Ranma pretty much bogged down into repetitive competitions of surreally unlikely martial arts forms. Inu-Yasha, on the other hand, is an adventure story with some comedic and romantic elements stirred in--it makes the comedy less repetitive and forced, like it too often seemed in her two prior works.

The scariest thing about Gundam Seed that I find is that the conflict between the Naturals and Co-ordinators is an allusion to Nazi Germany back in the 1930s.

I haven't seen any of it in years (the comic shop ran a tape for a while) but have fond memories of it. I didn't know who Casey Kasem was at the time, but thought he was pretty cool.
Well, disdain for anyone "different" from us is a universal human trait, after all, and thus it pops up a lot in fiction. Look at the mutant/human hatreds in the X-Men books for example.
The Coordinators are essentially an update of the Newtype concept found in the original Gundam and the Tomino-helmed sequels (Zeta, Double Zeta) though it was shadowy and undefined as some sort of vague "next step in human evolution" that just happened to make you a badass mecha pilot.
Seed gets credit for taking the concept to a realistic extreme; it doesn't hurt the point about the stupidity of racism that they put the most vulgar comments in the mouth of Flay, one of the resident vaccuum brains. (And she's a hypocrit to boot, as she seems to think Kira is all right)

I used to watch Dragonball when I was a kid!
Seriously though, I've seen a few of the Van Helsing shorts and they were pretty cool. I've also seen Ghost In The Shell, but wasn't nearly as impressed as most people seem to be.
I'm a big Spawn: TAS fan, but I doubt most anime fans would count that anyways.

I remember one of the films i saw on the sci-fi channel, it was called 'Road Buster', has any one else seen this? its damn good. I don't know of any anime of that specific name, but I do know of a film called Riding Bean which featured a smuggler nicknamed Bean who had an awesome car he called "The Road Buster". It may be that. In it, he's hired to transport a ransomed girl to a particular place (where a double-cross awaits) while being constantly pursued by a Zenigata-esque inept police officer. Does that sound even close? Maybe Sci-Fi just thought that Riding Bean was a stupid name and changed it. As for MY tastes: Start with Fritz's list, then add the following (in no particular order) Saikano Seikai Tenchi Muyo! Grave of the Fireflies Ah! My Goddess Dragon Ball (including Z, pointedly EXCLUDING GT) .Hack
