How to start this thread? Well, I'm proposing an obvious, entirely unsubtle writing exercise here. I didn't even think of it myself - I pinched it from SADCAT (hereafter Sarah - I can't call somebody SADCAT more than once) on DeviantArt (incidentally she doesn't know I'm linking her here, and probably never will - which I really think should add credibility when I tell you to check out her very awesome comic The Awakened). I've been looking through Sarah's DA journal, not terribly thoroughly, in the vague hope that my eye would fall upon the passage explaining the exercise. It didn't - but I really don't need Sarah's explanation. It's so simple. Basically, we put questions to writers about specific original characters. Any questions at all. One of Sarah's examples was, "What's his favourite kind of monkey?" Possibly she wasn't being entirely serious - but I do think that demonstrates succinctly what is meant by any question. How would this work? I don't know. Well, what Sarah does is to ask in her journal for questions on specific characters - and gets inundated. We could try it like that. An author comes to the thread, posts a message saying "Questions on Character X please" - possibly either gets no responses at all, or ends up being the only writer to take up the proposal (it'd be funny if that was me, wouldn't it? ), or both. Alternatively people could just jump in here if they have a particular question about an original character. Example: Question for Fritz, about John Spengler: What's his favourite kind of monkey? (Do answer that if you want to, Fritz, but I'm really not expecting you to.) Sitting here typing it all out like this, it can sound faintly dumb. People are likely to ask questions they don't really want to know the answer to, especially if they don't have any real questions - astonishingly I'm not that interested in John Spengler's favourite type of monkey. But it could also be a fun little exercise, and hopefully in some way useful to us writers - and oh I'd love it if the game became so popular that Fritz allowed me to sticky it ;D (my ambitions in life: become a published novelist and sticky a thread ). Sooo... is anyone up for it?

I think this sounds like fun. I am completely open to this, once I think up some good questions, I will post them. ghostdiva

Oh good. ;D Thanks, Ghostdiva - I'm so glad at least one person picked this up.
And since you did, I have a question for you about Edward Sanders: what made him decide to be a paediatric oncologist?

My first guess is one of those smarter chimpanzees, the ones that can take it's own cage apart if you accidentally leave a screwdriver by it. And one not above hurling feces at any passing accountants. ;D

What drove TJ to leave England and become a Ghostbuster?
(If that's something you want to keep hidden for now, then here's an alternate question): What was the drive of the separate members of the inquisitors to band together?
Maybe we should ask a question of the person who posts above us if they have original characters?

What drove TJ to leave England and become a Ghostbuster? (If that's something you want to keep hidden for now, Yeah. I have a specific story in mind that will explain that. I don't know when I'll be telling that story, but it won't be until we finally get the Gozer monkey off our backs. Ogre is really the one to ask to be certain, as he basically created the characters (I just refined them some). And some of what I do know I'm not gonna say because, again, it may spoil future story ideas (that, of course, assumes he's ever gonna write them...)

Hey. Sorry I haven't been back by...I have pneumonia and have been in a haze of medication of three days. But feeling better now. EGBFan: I can't tell you why Edward chose that field with out spoiling the plot for my next story. You will just have to wait. Now for my question, for EGBFan: What does Jessica do for a living now that she is grown? And why doesn't she want to work for the ghostbusters? Or does she? And to Fritz: What is John's favorite junk food? I think I established that Eden liked pretzels. You can tell a lot about a guy by his junk of choice. ghostdiva

I'm thinking of doing this as well and I need to think of some questions. You can ask me some questions about my characters, too.

If we get too specific, of course, there's a danger of asking writers to reveal spoilers. Not that it's a problem, as two "Sorry but I can't"s already attest - but still, we should probably try to steer of such questions as much as we can. Favourite movies/songs/monkeys/junk foods and such are always good ones - the idea of the exercise is, after all, for us writers to get to know our characters even better than we do already. Love interests is always a point of, er, interest, of course. Example: Fritz (you're ok with this, right? - anyone wanting to bow out has only to say so) - why, specifically, does TJ love John (assuming love isn't too strong a word), and vice-versa? (That gives you two questions to answer, doesn't it, along with the junk food issue - sorry.) Now for my question, for EGBFan: What does Jessica do for a living now that she is grown? I don't know. In the short scene I wrote, I had Jessica trailing around town with her infant son in the middle of the day - I figured she'd be with him most, if not all of the time. If someone suggested stay-at-home motherhood to her as she is now, she'd be adamant that it was never going to happen, but like the rest of us she will grow and change. Prior to this, I've no idea. She'll want to do something she enjoys, that's vaguely useful and that doesn't require a college education (I really think she won't want to go to college). Knowing Jess, she'll probably just fall in whatever direction life pushes her. No, she doesn't. Besides being entirely uninterested by science, gadgets and the paranormal (she gets plenty of that without working with it), she's more adventurous than that. She'll want to try new things and meet new people. She doesn't want to get into music either - she loves her parents, but she'll want to find her own direction in life rather than following theirs. Oscar having broken away and made something of himself may have something to do with this way of thinking - she'll never be internationally famous like him (and wouldn't want to be), but his success will encourage her to keep looking for whatever it is that makes her happiest.

John is his father's son in one particular way: he pigs out on Twinkies There are some aspects to the dynamic between John and TJ I don't want to go into here (save them for the stories) but a few things that have been hinted at: they're both intelligent (John more so, being a Spengler). They're both, in their own way, driven to be perfectionists--I think they both see each other as the person least likely to ever let them down (outside of family). But the fact that they can't quite make themselves completely sure of that is what puts the brakes on things currently. On top of that, there's just simply an animal attraction at work. John is tall, strong, and has a dose of his Dad's wierd charisma. TJ's not glamorous, but she's refined, athletic, and, er...well, Rosey helped establish young Mister Spengler's interest in a certain female physical attribute at a young age; Miss Anderson has not been genetically unblessed in that area. Of course, for various reasons both actually pull away because of that. John's his father's son more than is immediately apparent in this respect also; some of TJ's restraint is due to her uppercrust upbringing. Again, there's more too it than that, but that'll do for now, I hope.

are the twins scared that they won't like up to there fathers legacy John especially I haven't really written it in, but it seems extremely likely. It'd be hard not to be intimidated knowing you'd constantly be compared to the man who practically invented your field, especially when he used to change your diaper.

Oh, Fritz - that's not playing the game. Now, here's a good one: favourite songs. Everybody should have a favourite song. Ghostdiva: what's Edwards Sanders' favourite song? Fritz... I can't ask you to think of favourite songs for all your characters, so I guess it'll have to be your choice selection. If you can, I'm particularly interested in the 2024 team (however many you can, as they will be, or as they are now - I'm not fussy ;D). If a character has a reason for a particular song being their favourite, do share. Two authors sprung to mind, but please be aware this question is open to anyone who wants to answer for their characters.
