Okay, so we’ve got a Z-list going - the worst of the worst fics. The GB fanfiction alternative to the Golden Raspberries. To balance things out, we need an A-list - the best of the best fics. The GB fanfiction alternative to the Oscars.
Here are some fanfiction stories and authors which have been deemed worthy of A-list status, in no particular order.
Fritz – ‘Ghostbusters: Forever’ (much-anticipated culmination of a decades-long love story, a beautifully-written story reflecting on Egon and Janine’s relationship in the past, present and hopes for future, you are cordially invited to attend the Wedding of the Century)
Fritz – ‘The Zodiac Imperative’ (for its subtle and well-crafted E/J love scene, along with an intriguing, gripping storyline)
Kingpin – ‘As Dream Fade’ (for covering the circumstances behind the break-up of the Ghostbusters exceptionally well)
Fritz, EGB Fan, Kingpin – ‘Dreams Reborn’ (sequel to ‘As Dreams Fade’, bringing the Ghostbusters back together, including the wonderful and touching E/J engagement scene)
EGB Fan – ‘Blood Heat’ (I love any story with Jessica Venkman in it, and this one touches on the subject of first love and the pain that it can bring)
Sinister (Iain) – ‘Only Ghouls & Hearses’ (hilarious crossover, with great characterisation of both the Ghostbusters and the characters from ‘Only Fools & Horses’)
Mara – ‘Hearts & Flowers’ (great alternative pairing fic, and although it’s J/P, it ends on a positive E/J note, so it’s not all bad. ;D)
EGB Fan – ‘Second Chances’ (a great story, tackling some of the issues of Andre Wallance’s parenting skills, it is captivating, heartfelt, and the characterisation is perfect)
Mary Morris – ‘Wrath of a Redhead’ (This is what happens if you mess with Janine. Be afraid. Be very afraid. ;D)
Audrey Lynne – ‘The Letter’ (beautiful short piece, a written goodbye to Dana from Peter)
Ami Ree – ‘The Morning After’ (a lovely E/J piece)
Tammey Reed – 'The Morning After’ (another lovely E/J piece, set the morning after their wedding)
Cindy R – ‘A Dish Served Cold’ and its sequel, ‘The Last Laugh' (making Walter Peck more dastardly than he was ever portrayed in the film, these stories is extremely well-written, and contains some lovely E/J scenes)
EGB Fan – ‘Extreme Ghostbusters: Zero Tolerance’ (wonderful story about the pains of growing up, with a ghostly twist)
WOLVERINE25TH – 'Ghostbusters 2.5’ (best creative adaptation of GB2 I’ve read – it makes you wonder what could have been…)
Fritz – ‘Where in the World is Chelsea Aberdeen?’ (probably my favourite Franchise story so far – poignant and intriguing, bringing together Fritz and the members of Nightsquad in a quest to discover the truth about Chelsea’s disappearance - unfinished)
Jen Spengler – ‘Secretary’ (the best GB poem I’ve ever read – perfectly conveying Janine’s longing for Egon)
Singe – ‘Regina’ (Very, very disturbing story with religious themes, but extremely well-written with a strong E/J note to it)
Fritz – ‘Invasion of the Danish Snatchers’ (funny, with some very well-created villains, featuring a date between Egon and Janine, stunningly written, could easily have been a canon episode of RGB)
Various Authors – ‘Chronicles of Gozer’ (a huge epic of a series, bringing together all of the GB franchises and the original GBs to battle the return of Gozer)
Princess Artemis – ‘Relative Absolution’ (Stunning novella-sized piece, with perfect characterisation and a deeply involving story)
Milareppa – ‘Does Heaven Listen’ (great characterisation, with a premise that nature can be a huge threat when humans intervene, it is difficult to know how the guys are going to get out of this situation – unfortunately the story is unfinished)
Lucidscreamer – ‘Nevermore’ (a wonderfully-written, haunting piece, melding The Crow with the GBs - unfinished)
Epona Harper – ‘Cruel Necessity’ (another novella-sized piece, Peter has the ability to read other people’s minds, a well-written piece, with great characterisation and thrilling to the last)
Jeff Morris – ‘A Perfect World’ (The team gets everything they ever wanted, but at what price? Some lovely E/J moments in this one – watch out for the surprise twist at the end)
Sheila Paulson - Father to the Man (alternate universe story, with a shocking revelation about David Stantz)
CJ – ‘A Boy Named Ray’ (wonderfully-written Ray-centric story, poignantly reflecting on moments from his past)
Fritz – ‘Terror on the Jersey Turnpike’ (funny and action-packed adventure on the Jersey Turnpike, complete with biker-chick!)
Dan Evans & Tom Sanford – ‘NOMAD: Loss’ (sad and poignant end to a great franchise, extremely well-written piece with great character-interaction)
Fritz – ‘Home Turf’ [great franchise fic, the first time-encounter between Fritz and Joey of GBWC and the OGBs, with a very interesting story - Fritz has a ghostly encounter with someone he’s seen before…)
Fritz – ‘Act Two’ (the GBWC are back with a new look, a creepy new case and the return of an old friend… as always, wonderfully written, with a great story and a wonderfully sadistic villain)
EGB Fan – ‘Death Row Part 1’, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 (very emotional piece, with some touching and realistic Eduardo/Kylie moments)
EGB Fan – ‘Grief is not the Suez Canal’ (Eduardo’s encounter with a medium causes problems for the team, a great story centring on the issue of loss, with some lovely Eduardo/Kylie moments)
Jeff Chrismer (Razors Edge) – ‘Post-Mortem Kombat’ (extremely well-written action-packed piece, featuring the invention of the neutrona saber, and a fantastic ninja battle)
Dommi-chan – ‘Concepts of the Misinformed’ and ‘Karma's Just a Five Letter Word' (In the first story, Ray and Winston overhear a conversation between Egon and Peter and completely misinterpret it, and in the second, Egon and Peter find out about it and decide to mess with their heads a bit – two hilarious stories, well-written with great characterisation, and fun with flat-packed furniture)
Fritz – ‘Fateful Encounter’ and ‘Fateful Opportunity’ (the first story features Janine’s first-ever encounter with Egon, the second story features Janine’s chequered employment history ;D)
Vincent Belmont – ‘All Roads Lead to Raccoon City Part 1’, Part 2, Part 3 (a trip to Raccoon city very quickly turns rather sinister as Ecto-1 crashes and things turn from bad to worse - a very gripping and intriguing story - unfinished)
EGB Fan – ‘Rebirth & Retribution Part 1’, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6 (first appearance of Jessica Venkman and Conchita Rivera)
EGB Fan – ‘A Little Boy Lost’ (touching piece, featuring what happened to Jack after the EGB episode Grundlesque)
Sinister (Iain) – ‘GBUK: Trials & Tribulations’ (after a containment unit breach, one of the GBUK team is arrested and Vincent Belmont is sent to help – a gripping story and very well-written)
Fritz – ‘GBWC: Love Sucks’ (fun, saucy story with some great characterisation, a succubus sets her sights on one of the members of the team and all hell breaks loose)
Jeff Chrismer (Razors Edge) – ‘Food For Thought’ (a story full of action and intrigue, with characters from the past returning to both help and hinder the GBWC team - unfinished)
Christine Renner – ‘Requiem’ and ‘Bookends’ (very touching stories set later on in the GBs lives, showing how deep friendship and love can really go - some very, very emotional E/J moments)
P. Morrigan – ‘Conundrum’ (E/J, are they or aren't they and why should Peter care? Deals with what Egon and Janine's possible fooling around could mean in the "real" world)
Kingpin – Syren Call (exacerbating misconceptions about the degenerative effects rock music can have on young minds)
Fritz – Return of the Jersey Turnpike Terror (The bikers are back, and Eduardo dresses up as a woman, a definite must-read ;D)
Wolfen Moondaughter – Embrace The Night (a well written, beautifully illustrated Ed/Ky story by a shipper, and it's about werewolves - how cool is that??)
Dommi-chan – ‘On the Rules Regarding Natural Selection’ (the guys are stuck in traffic, and have a really bizarre conversation.Let the snarky comments fly!)
Mary-Jean Holmes - ‘The Root of All Evil’ (A disillusioned Janine finds affection elsewhere, and Egon has to face some home truths before it’s too late… Novella)
Linda Dennis - 'Still Life' (Janine becomes trapped in the rubble of an exploded building)
batE - 'Thorny Situation' (Egon takes suggestions from the guys about how to spice up his love life... with hilarious results)
Ghostdiva - 'The Eyes Have Her', focusing on the Lotsabucks incident from the points of view of Janine and the demon i.e. all the things that were going on when the fans were still thinking, What? Where's Janine getting the money for all this plastic surgery?
