I also say Ghostbusters and that's one of my favorites. I did like the second one too. That's my opinion.

GB2 had it's moments, but was far inferior. I blame Reitman's hubris. Now, if only Derek would get me copies of his GB2 rejected scripts...love to see what could've been.

The first movie is definitely my favourite.

It had action, it had romance (both from Peter/Dana and from my absolute favourite couple ever! ^_^), it had comedy, and it had originality.
Also, it had the Staypuft Marshmallow Man. C'mon, how many villains are so utterly ridiculous and yet very freaky at the same time? ;)

I remember the first time I saw that thing. I didn't know whether to laugh at it or be scared of it.

The second movie, while good, was just a copycat of the first. And it didn't help matters that it contained the worst idea in the entire GB universe: Louis and Janine as a couple.
Seriously, I have to know, were the writers and producers on drugs during the making of that movie? Or had they gone temporarily insane? Or even just really, really drunk?

Why, God? Tell me why!

*Ahem*

Anyway, while I did enjoy the second movie despite that stupid idea, it definitely could have been written much better.

And I notice that nobody voted for it at all. Heh heh, poor movie can't get any love.

1st: intelligent, quirky, dialogue that appeared to be off the cuff, but most times it wasn't. Scientists as the heroes; not small brained muscle men. Great score, great visuals..
2nd: watering down characters, changing established canon w/o explainations (could've have accepted Egon & Janine not together, but w/Loius? UGH!), repeating the elements of the 1st as if that would ensure success, not scary enough, too "goody-goody" message. Good film, not great, & nothing compared to the 1st.

This is from a recent Ramis interview:
IGNFF: You don't seem to have had the greatest of luck with sequels…
RAMIS: Well, actually, the two big ones - Ghostbusters and Analyze That - were both driven by what I thought were worthy follow-up ideas to the original movies. To some extent they got a little twisted in the execution. Ghostbusters II I didn't direct, so I was a writer in service of the director, Ivan Reitman, and the actors. Analyze That got bashed a little bit, and it got a little out-of-hand in the last act, but I actually thought that that movie was driven by something really interesting and important.
Now if we could a worthy 3rd film to finish out the series, I don't have to wander the Earth as a ghost of a disappointed film fan. Odd numbered Ghostbusters could be excellent...kinda like the theory w/Trek films.

Just thought I'd throw this out there: There's currently a fic floating around out there that takes GB2 and IMPROVES it. *hint, hint*

Oh, and apparently anybody who hates GB2 for the usual reasons doesn't "get it" in terms of the point of the movies. At least that's what some moron on SHH says.

Ahem:

"PS : GHOSTBUSTERS 2 NEEDS NO CHANGING WHATSOEVER. IT'S AS GOOD AS GHOSTBUSTERS 1"

"I'll take a look and let you know, but I'm sure you won't have improved the movie." (In regards to my story)

"'Ecto-1 is a familiar sight on the streets of New York these days. A beautiful 1959 Cadillac ambulance/hearse combination, she runs like it was her first day off the assembly line. Of course, it took a lot elbow grease and determination to get her there, but the efforts were obviously well worth it.' (From my story)

You ruined the movie right there. If you think the Ghostbusters is supposed to be a well-run business you've entirely missed the point of both movies."

"Fans hardly ever know what's best. Producers usually don't either. In this case, Reitman did. I'm not saying you didn't adhere to the complaints of the fans. I'm saying it was a mistake to do so.

Ghostbusters is a comedy about a few guys in way over their heads with absolutely no business knowledge, and only half of them understand the technology. This is why it's funny. After quieting the supernatural disturbances at the end of the first film its only natural that they'd loose clients, since there are fewer ghosts.

Ray and Winston doing a birthday party!? Come on, that's hilarious."

"Ghostbusters 2 is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Sorry if you don't feel the same way."

"Ghostbusters 2 owned. Its a classic. So many great Venkman lines."(Different guy, still a moron)

Well, after all these years, I've finally got around to contributing to this thread. What took me so long? Well, actually, I couldn't make up my mind. Yes, for more or less three years - that's how close it is.

But look at that, I've given GB2 its only vote. Now why would I do a thing like that? Well, I'll start by saying that the common complaint i.e. what they did with Janine (much of it involving Louis) never bothered me. I was very young the first few times I saw the movie, and the changes to Janine's appearance looked to me like nothing more than an innocent attempt to try and help kids more familiar with her RGB incarnation to recognise her - so just, none of it was ever an issue.

The basic reason I voted GB2 is that it gives me noticeably more laughs. There are some truly funny lines (Peter MacNicol having his share - he's very good), that essentially make it more memorable for me than GB1. The plot was also more appealing to me personally - I guess maybe I've got a thing about historical characters coming to life in their portraits. And I do like Peter's interaction with Oscar and Dana. A guy chasing after his ex, now a single mother, is something you don't see in a lot of other movies - whereas the romantic element of GB1 is just... everywhere.

You're very very brave, Rosey.

It's a minority opinion,no doubt about it, but you're entitled to it. And you do make a couple of very good points.
